The hotter the roof, the more energy it takes to cool the building beneath it. So, in 1999, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program began rating roofing materials for energy efficiency.

As of January 1, 2010, the California Energy Commission’s updated Title-24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards for residential and non-residential roofing are now in force, otherwise know as “Cool-Roof”
